Sri Lanka’s veteran weightlifter Indika Disanayake has qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following an impressive performance at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held in India.

Competing in the 71kg weight category, Disanayake lifted 130kg in the Snatch and 150kg in the Clean & Jerk, recording a total of 280kg. His efforts earned him a fourth-place finish, which was enough to seal qualification for the upcoming Games.

This achievement also marks a historic milestone for the Sri Lankan lifter, as the 2026 edition will be his fifth appearance at the Commonwealth Games. He has previously represented Sri Lanka in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022, establishing himself as one of the country’s most consistent and enduring athletes on the international stage.

Though he narrowly missed out on a podium finish this time, Disanayake’s qualification reflects both his determination and remarkable longevity in the sport. For Sri Lanka, his presence at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will once again boost the nation’s chances in weightlifting, a sport where the country has steadily produced notable performances in recent years.

With years of experience and multiple Games appearances behind him, Indika Disanayake’s journey to yet another Commonwealth stage stands as a testament to his dedication and commitment to the sport of weightlifting.
