Sri Lanka began their Asia Cup T20 campaign in style, defeating Bangladesh by six wickets in Abu Dhabi.
Winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to field first and made an immediate impact, dismissing Bangladesh’s first two wickets without conceding a run.
The Lankan bowlers kept up the pressure, reducing Bangladesh to 53 for 5. However, Shamim Hossain (42*), together with Jaker Ali (41*), steadied the innings with an unbeaten 86-run stand, helping Bangladesh post 139 for 5 in their 20 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets.
Chasing 140 for victory, Sri Lanka lost opener Kusal Mendis for 3, but Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings with a fine 50 off 10th career T20I fifty, while Kamindu Mendis remained unbeaten on 46. Their 95-run partnership ensured Sri Lanka reached the target in just 14.4 overs, finishing at 140 for 4.
Kamindu Mendis was named Player of the Match.
Sri Lanka will play their second match tomorrow against Hong Kong in the same tournament.
