The sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) kicked off in spectacular fashion at the SSC Ground in Colombo, with Galle Gallants opening their campaign with a convincing 36-run victory over Jaffna Kings.
The tournament’s opening ceremony featured a colourful entertainment programme attended by Minister of Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee Chairman Iran Wickramaratne, and several distinguished guests.
The LPL 2026 trophy was officially unveiled in the presence of the captains of the five participating teams, while a dazzling drone show added to the celebrations before the opening match.
Following the ceremony, Galle Gallants posted an imposing 213/6 from their 20 overs after being asked to bat.
Charith Asalanka led the charge with a brilliant 65, while Sam Harper contributed 40. Sahan Arachchige chipped in with 35, and captain Dasun Shanaka provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 31.
Chasing 214, Jaffna Kings were bowled out for 178 in 19.4 overs, falling 36 runs short of the target.
Dunith Wellalage top-scored for Jaffna with 40, but the chase was derailed by an outstanding spell from Eshan Malinga, who claimed 4 wickets to guide Galle Gallants to a winning start.
