Four Sri Lankan boxers are set to enter the ring today, vying for gold and silver medals at the Asian Under-22 Boxing Championship.
Yesterday, Hiruni Wijesinghe brought pride to the nation by securing a silver medal. She competed in the final of the 63kg women’s weight category at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, where she faced Kazakhstan’s Alina Kudeygenova. Despite a determined performance, Hiruni fell short in the final bout, earning Sri Lanka its first silver medal of the tournament.
On the final day of the competition, Mohammad Yasmin Yousuf will represent Sri Lanka in the men’s 75kg final, where he is set to face a boxer from Kyrgyzstan.
In the women’s division, S. Narasingha (75kg), N. Nayakarathna (63kg), and N. Tharushika (81kg) will also compete in their respective finals today, with hopes of adding more medals to Sri Lanka’s tally.
This marks a significant milestone for Sri Lankan boxing as the nation continues to rise on the Asian boxing stage.
