For the first time in history, insurance coverage has been introduced for rugby players in Sri Lanka, an initiative led by Sports Minister Harin Fernando.
The symbolic launch of this insurance scheme took place today at Havelock Grounds, prior to a match in the Inter-School League Rugby Tournament. The coverage will benefit players under the ages of 16 and 19 participating in school-level rugby.
Additionally, a financial grant of Rs. 5 million was provided to the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society during the event. The Henry Pedris Grounds was also officially handed over to Isipathana College through a Cabinet directive, with the handover conducted by the Sports Minister.
In a separate gesture, a financial grant of Rs. 1 million was awarded to H.I.C. De Soysa, a rugby player from St. Joseph’s College, Maradana, who sustained injuries during last year’s Inter-School Rugby Tournament.
