Sri Lanka’s Medal-Winning Heroes Return Home from Continental Glory

Sri Lanka’s athletics team returned home last night to a warm welcome after a stellar performance at the inaugural World Athletics Continental Tour Championships – 2025 in Bhubaneswar, India. Officials from the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka, along with representatives from the Armed Forces’ sports divisions, were present to greet the medal-winning contingent.

The nine-member Sri Lankan squad produced a remarkable showing, with eight athletes clinching podium finishes—securing two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze.

Javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga headlined the meet, unleashing a massive 86.50m throw to win gold and set a new national record. This mark stands as the seventh-best in the world for the event this year and earned him a coveted spot at the upcoming World Championships in Japan.

Sri Lanka’s men’s 4x400m relay team also struck gold with a powerful finish that left the competition trailing.

In silver medal performances, Nadeesha Lekamge took second place in the women’s javelin, while sprinter Chamod Yodasinghe powered to silver in the men’s 100m.

Sumedha Ranasinghe added to the tally with a bronze in the men’s javelin, rounding off an unforgettable outing for the island nation.

From breaking records to booking tickets to the world stage, Sri Lanka’s athletes proved that they can shine bright against Asia’s—and the world’s—best.
