Sri Lanka delivered a dazzling performance at the Continental Athletics Championships held in India, highlighted by Rumesh Tharanga’s record-breaking javelin throw.

On his very first attempt, he launched the spear to a stunning 86.50 metres, rewriting the Sri Lankan national record and earning qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan.

This mark also ranks as the seventh-best distance in the world for the event this year.

In the same event, Sumedha Ranasinghe threw 80.65 metres to clinch the bronze medal, also securing his place at the World Championships.

Sprinter Chamod Yodasinghe impressed in the men’s 100m, finishing fourth in the heats to reach the finals, where he clocked 10.43 seconds to take silver.

In the women’s javelin, national champion Nadeesha Dilhanie Lekamge claimed silver with a throw of 54.96 metres.

Sri Lanka’s young men’s 4x400m relay team—Sadev Rajakaruna, Omel Sachintha, Minol Inesh, and Kalhara Idup—stunned the home crowd by overpowering India to win gold in the closing moments, stopping the clock at 3:08.22 minutes.

From the field to the track, Sri Lanka’s athletes showed depth, determination, and world-class quality—setting the stage for even greater triumphs on the global stage.
