Paraguay booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after edging Germany 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in the Round of 32.
Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute before Kai Havertz equalised for Germany in the 54th minute to bring the contest level.
With the knockout match still tied after 90 minutes, an additional 30 minutes of extra time were played. However, neither side could find the breakthrough, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Germany converted three of their spot-kicks through Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Nadiem Amiri. Paraguay held their nerve as Mauricio, Gustavo Gómez, Matías Galarza, and José Canale all found the net to secure a 4-3 shootout victory.
The result marks Germany’s exit from the tournament, while Paraguay advance to the Round of 16 with a memorable win.
