Sri Lanka’s leading medal hopeful, Rumesh Tharanga, will begin his Commonwealth Games campaign today as he competes in the men’s javelin throw qualification round in Glasgow, Scotland.
The qualification event is scheduled to begin at 2:55 p.m. Sri Lanka time, with 18 athletes set to battle for places in the final.
Rumesh heads into the competition in outstanding form, having recorded the world’s best javelin throw of the year with a remarkable distance of 92.62 metres.
The Sri Lankan star is also currently ranked No. 2 in the world in the men’s javelin throw, making him one of the favourites to challenge for a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Joining him in the qualification round will be fellow Sri Lankan Sumedha Ranasinghe, who will also be aiming to secure a place in the final.
All eyes will be on the Sri Lankan duo as they look to keep the country’s medal hopes alive on the athletics stage.
