Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga has climbed to the No. 1 spot in the World Athletics men’s javelin rankings, following his outstanding performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Tharanga sealed the Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow, Scotland, with a superb throw of 89.75 metres, further cementing his status among the world’s elite javelin throwers.
The historic achievement has earned the Sri Lankan star 1,354 ranking points, propelling him to the top of the global rankings.
It marks the first time in history that a Sri Lankan athlete has reached World No. 1 in the men’s javelin throw, making it another landmark moment for the nation’s athletics.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Julian Weber, who previously occupied the top spot, has slipped to second place in the latest rankings.
