South Africa were bowled out for 329 in their first innings on the opening day of the first Test against Australia in their three-match series, as Mitchell Starc produced a superb bowling performance.
After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins elected to field first.
South African openers Aiden Markram and Marcus Ackermann gave their side an excellent start, putting together a formidable 158-run partnership. Markram scored 78, while Ackermann narrowly missed out on a century, falling for 95.
However, their dismissals triggered a collapse in South Africa’s middle order, allowing Australia to regain control of the innings.
Marco Jansen and Ryan Rickelton then attempted to rebuild the innings, combining for a 95-run partnership. Jansen contributed a valuable 52.
Starc was Australia’s standout bowler, claiming six wickets for 72 runs to dismantle the South African batting line-up. Nathan Lyon also made an important contribution, taking two wickets.
