Sri Lanka’s national champion Rumesh Tharanga has secured first place in the men’s javelin throw at the final leg of the Diamond League athletics series in Brussels, Belgium.
Tharanga produced a throw of 89.04 metres to claim victory at the prestigious meeting.
The win also saw him secure the 2026 Diamond League title in the men’s javelin throw, earning the Diamond League trophy. More importantly, it marks the first-ever Diamond League Diamond Trophy won by a Sri Lankan athlete.
With this victory, Tharanga has now won five consecutive Diamond League javelin competitions.
He competed at six Diamond League meetings this season, finishing first in five and second in one. His only runner-up finish came at the Rabat Diamond League, before he went on to win four consecutive events in Rome, Doha, Lausanne and Zurich.
Tharanga produced a sensational 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League, which was the world’s best javelin throw of the year at that point.
He continued his remarkable form at the most recent Zurich Diamond League, where he secured first place with another outstanding 92.07-metre effort.
Tharanga’s remarkable consistency throughout the season has also seen him establish himself as the world No. 1 in men’s javelin throw.
