Sri Lanka made a strong start at the Under-22 Youth Boxing Championship, with two of its young pugilists claiming impressive victories in the preliminary round matches held yesterday at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
In the 48kg weight class, Sri Lanka’s Sathsara Warnakulasuriya delivered a clinical performance to defeat Enerli Anarbekov of Kyrgyzstan. Warnakulasuriya was declared the winner by a commanding 5-0 decision, marking a standout debut as the first Sri Lankan to enter the ring in this year’s tournament.
Adding to the home nation’s success, Hansajith Jayatissa also triumphed in the 57kg category. Facing off against Mohammed Alhaiday of Saudi Arabia, Jayatissa matched his compatriot’s feat with another 5-0 victory.
The wins give Sri Lanka a strong boost in the tournament’s early stages, showcasing the promise and preparation of its young boxing talents on the international stage.
