Sri Lanka’s Sugathadasa National Sports Complex has entered a new era after the official unveiling of a modern timing and competition equipment system, replacing facilities that had been in use for more than 25 years.
The new facilities at the Sugathadasa Aquatic Sports Complex were officially opened on July 24, 2026, by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage and Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne.
The outdated equipment, which had served the venue for over two decades, has now been replaced with international-standard technology, providing athletes with world-class facilities for training and competition.

- Modern electronic timing system (Time Clock)
- Touch Pad timing system
- Advanced digital display board
- International-standard starting blocks
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister and Deputy Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading Sri Lanka’s sporting infrastructure and providing athletes with facilities that meet international standards.
They noted that the new technology will ensure accurate race timing, enhance athlete preparation, and enable Sri Lanka to host and compete in national and international swimming events with greater confidence.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Chairman of the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority Ranjith Wimalaratne, government officials, representatives of national aquatic sports associations, and a large gathering of sports enthusiasts.
