Sri Lanka has suffered two injury setbacks ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with gymnast Tiyana Sumanasekara limiting her participation and sprinter Kalhara Indupa being ruled out of the competition.
Gymnast Tiyana Sumanasekara has decided to compete only in the women’s balance beam event after sustaining a shoulder injury.
Following medical advice and an assessment of her physical condition, Sumanasekara has withdrawn from the artistic gymnastics all-around and all other scheduled events to focus solely on the balance beam competition.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan athlete Kalhara Indupa has been forced to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games due to injury.
Indupa had been selected to compete in the men’s 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay events.
A medical evaluation conducted by the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Institute concluded that he was not fit enough to compete at the Games.
The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka officially confirmed his withdrawal.
The setbacks come as Sri Lanka begins its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with hopes that the remaining athletes can make a strong impact on the international stage.
