Sri Lanka’s men’s rugby team claimed third place in the second leg of the Asian Rugby Sevens Series, which concluded today at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo. The women’s championship was won by Japan, while the men’s title went to Hong Kong.
The two-day tournament saw Sri Lanka impress in the group stage, topping Pool C after defeating Uzbekistan, Singapore, and China to reach the semifinals. In the semis, the Lankans faced Asian powerhouse Japan, where they narrowly lost 15–12 in a tightly contested encounter.
Competing for the third-place playoff, Sri Lanka once again met China. At halftime, the scores were level at 7–7, but Sri Lanka pulled away in the second half, adding 12 more points while conceding only 7, to secure a 19–14 victory.
Sri Lanka’s points came through two converted tries and one unconverted try, sealing a well-deserved bronze finish in front of their home fans.
