The 2026 Commonwealth Games came to a spectacular close following a vibrant closing ceremony, bringing the 11-day sporting extravaganza in Glasgow, Scotland, to an end.

Sri Lanka wrapped up the Games with one gold medal and one silver medal, finishing 17th on the overall medal table.

The Games, which began on July 23, featured 2,729 athletes from 74 nations competing across a wide range of sports. The closing ceremony got underway at 1:30 a.m. Sri Lanka time, with athletes from all participating nations making a grand entrance into the stadium, accompanied by a performance from Australian singer Delta Goodrem.

Sri Lanka’s gold medallist Rumesh Tharanga had the honour of carrying the national flag during the closing ceremony. Tharanga etched his name into history by winning the country’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in 20 years with his triumph in the men’s javelin throw.

Sri Lanka’s other medal came through para-athlete Palitha Bandara, who secured a silver medal in the discus throw, adding another memorable achievement to the nation’s campaign.

Australia topped the final medal standings with an impressive haul of 171 medals, comprising 70 gold, 45 silver, and 56 bronze, finishing comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
