30 Years On: The Day Sri Lanka Conquered the Cricket World

It was a day that changed Sri Lankan cricket forever.

Exactly 30 years ago, the Sri Lanka national cricket team etched their name into history by winning their first-ever World Cup under the inspiring leadership of Arjuna Ranatunga.

The date was March 17, 1996—a moment that still lives in the hearts of millions.

At the iconic Lahore, Sri Lanka faced the mighty Australia national cricket team in the final of the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Few expected what was about to unfold.

Chasing a competitive target of 242 runs, Sri Lanka showed composure, confidence, and belief. With 22 balls to spare, they crossed the finish line—securing a famous seven-wicket victory and sparking celebrations across the nation.

At the heart of this triumph was a magical performance by Aravinda de Silva. Calm under pressure, he crafted a brilliant unbeaten 107 runs, while also delivering with the ball—taking 3 wickets for 42 runs. It was a performance for the ages, earning him the Man of the Match award.

Throughout the tournament, Sanath Jayasuriya had been unstoppable, redefining aggressive opening batting and ultimately being crowned Player of the Tournament.

But this victory was not built on individual brilliance alone. It was a true team effort. Heroes like Asanka Gurusinha, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Tillakaratne, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Dharmasena, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Upul Chandana, Ravindra Pushpakumara and Marvan Atapattu all played their part in this unforgettable journey.

The tournament itself was co-hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan—but in the end, it was Sri Lanka who rose above all.

Three decades later, that historic victory is more than just a win—it is a symbol of belief, unity, and the moment a nation dared to dream… and succeeded.
