Sri Lanka will face Pakistan in the third and final T20I of their series in Rawalpindi today, hoping to avoid a series whitewash after losing the first two matches.
With Pakistan already holding an unassailable 2–0 lead, Sri Lanka will be looking to salvage some pride and finish the tour’s T20I leg with a victory.
One of Sri Lanka’s biggest concerns over the past two years has been the lack of a settled T20I combination. Despite experimenting with different team combinations, the management has struggled to find a consistent formula.
Individual batters have produced promising performances in isolated matches, but maintaining that form from one game to the next remains a challenge.
Sri Lanka have also struggled in the bowling department. Dushmantha Chameera appears to have lost some of his rhythm, based on his recent performances. Although every player can go through a difficult spell, Sri Lanka need reliable alternatives who can step up when key bowlers are out of form.
The absence of Wanindu Hasaranga may also have affected Sri Lanka during this series. However, the team’s inconsistent results in recent tournaments, including those in which Hasaranga featured, suggest that the challenges extend beyond the absence of one player.
Sri Lanka could make changes for today’s match, although the available squad offers limited scope for a major reshuffle. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth could replace Maheesh Theekshana, while Kamil Mishara may be given another opportunity to prove himself.
Pakistan, having already secured the series, could rest one or two of their top-order batters. Their middle order, however, has not been thoroughly tested during the series, making today’s match a potential opportunity to assess its depth.
For Sri Lanka, the final T20I is about more than avoiding a 3–0 defeat. It is an opportunity to address their weaknesses, find greater consistency and restore confidence ahead of their upcoming assignments.
The match is scheduled to begin at 6.30 p.m. Sri Lanka time in Rawalpindi.
