Egypt secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
The Round of 32 clash was played in Dallas, USA. Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute, allowing the African side to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Australia equalised in the 55th minute, and with neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the match was decided on penalties.
Egypt held their nerve by converting four spot-kicks, while Australia managed just two, sealing Egypt’s place in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Argentina overcame Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in an entertaining knockout clash in Miami.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the first half to give Argentina a 1-0 lead at the break. Cape Verde fought back with two second-half goals, while Argentina added another to force extra time after the match ended 2-2 in regulation.
Argentina then scored the decisive goal in extra time to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory and progress to the Round of 16.
In the day’s other Round of 32 fixture, Colombia edged Ghana 1-0 to advance.
Colombia scored the only goal of the match in the first half and maintained their lead until the final whistle, with Ghana unable to find an equaliser.
The victory sealed Colombia’s place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
