Persistent rain once again disrupted play, with only 43 overs possible during the day. India added 172 runs while losing seven wickets.
Devdutt Padikkal continued his outstanding innings, reaching 167, while KL Rahul scored 82 and Dhruv Jurel contributed a valuable 51.
Making his Test debut, Sri Lankan spinner Keshara Nuwanth impressed with three wickets, while Prabath Jayasuriya led the attack with four wickets. Asitha Fernando claimed the other wicket.
At stumps, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna remained unbeaten at the crease, with India just one wicket away from being bowled out.
