Sri Lankan batter Pathum Nissanka crossed the milestone of 1000 career Test runs today during Day 3 of the first Test match against Bangladesh. The match is being played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
Bangladesh began the day at 484 for 9 in their first innings and were eventually bowled out for 495. The innings featured two centuries for the visitors. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando claimed 4 wickets, while Milan Rathnayake and Tarindu Ratnayake picked up 3 wickets each.
Sri Lanka’s reply began with openers Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Udara. The first wicket to fall was Udara, who was dismissed for 29 runs. Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal then built a solid 157-run partnership for the second wicket. Chandimal contributed with his 33rd Test half-century before being dismissed for 54 runs.
Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews, playing in his final Test match, came in next. Nissanka reached his third Test century during the innings — his first against Bangladesh. Mathews and Nissanka added 89 runs for the third wicket before Mathews was dismissed for 39.
Nissanka, who was playing a composed and dominant innings, eventually fell for 187, his highest Test score to date. His century and milestone of surpassing 1000 Test runs came in the same innings, marking a memorable day in his career.
By the end of Day 3, Sri Lanka had reached 368 for 4. Kamindu Mendis was unbeaten on 37, while captain Dhananjaya de Silva was at the crease with 17 not out, as Sri Lanka continue their effort to match Bangladesh’s first innings total.
