The excitement of the FIFA World Cup spread across North America on Thursday as Canada and the United States hosted additional opening ceremonies, following the tournament’s launch in co-host nation Mexico.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being jointly hosted by Canada, United States, and Mexico.
Canada’s opening ceremony took place in Toronto, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and entertainment scene.
The event featured performances from renowned Canadian artists including Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette. The celebrations continued with appearances from Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, and William Prince.
Following the ceremony, Canada faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup group-stage encounter at the same venue.
Bosnia struck first in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukić found the back of the net, giving his side a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Canada responded in the 78th minute through striker Cyle Larin, whose equalizer brought the home crowd to life.
Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams taking a point from their opening fixture.
