Sri Lankan wrestler Nipuni Wasana, who secured a gold medal at the Asian Beach Games, returned to the island yesterday along with the national team.
Sri Lanka concluded the tournament with an impressive total of seven medals, including one gold.
The 6th Asian Beach Games were held in Sanya, China, where Nipuni Wasana clinched gold in the women’s under-50kg wrestling event.
She defeated her Vietnamese opponent in the final by 3 points to 1 to secure the top podium finish.
Officials from the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation were present at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake to warmly welcome the gold medalist and the team.
Earlier, Sri Lanka’s kabaddi teams and track and field athletes who also won medals had already returned to the country.
