Did You Know About the Javelin Used in International Competitions?

Javelin throw may look like a relatively simple athletics event at first glance, but the javelins used at international competitions must meet strict technical specifications.

  • Is Weight and Length All That Matters?

According to World Athletics rules, javelins used in international and World Rankings competitions must comply with the technical standards set by World Athletics, and certified equipment must be used at relevant competitions.

Men’s Javelin – Weight and Length

For senior men’s and U20 men’s competitions, the javelin must have a minimum weight of 800 grams.

Its total length must be between 2.60 metres and 2.70 metres.

That means the javelin used in an international men’s competition is more than 2.6 metres long — significantly longer than the height of many people.

Women’s Javelin – Weight and Length

For senior women’s and U20 women’s competitions, the javelin must have a minimum weight of 600 grams.

Its total length must be between 2.20 metres and 2.30 metres.

The weight also varies according to age category. U18 men use a 700-gram javelin, while U18 women use a 500-gram javelin.

Do Athletes Bring Their Own Javelins?

This is an interesting question.

Under World Athletics rules, throwing implements, including javelins, are generally provided by the competition organisers.

However, depending on the competition regulations and with the approval of the Technical Delegate, an athlete may also submit their own personal javelin for use in the competition.

But athletes cannot simply bring any javelin they want.

The javelin must:

  • Be World Athletics certified.
  • Be inspected and approved by the competition’s technical officials before the event.
  • Be officially marked after approval.
  • Be made available for use by other athletes competing in the event.

Unless otherwise decided by the Technical Delegate, an athlete may submit no more than two of their own implements for a throwing event.

Therefore, even if an athlete brings a javelin they are familiar with from training, it cannot be reserved exclusively for their personal use. Once approved for the competition, it becomes available for use by other competitors as well.

Is Weight and Length All That Matters?

No.

World Athletics specifies much more than simply the total weight and length of a javelin.

There are detailed requirements covering factors such as the centre of gravity, length of the metal head, shaft diameter, grip width and the overall shape of the javelin.

For example, an 800-gram javelin must have a shaft diameter of 25–30 millimetres at its thickest point, while the grip must be 150–160 millimetres wide.

This means that at an international competition, it is not only the athlete’s performance that is subject to strict standards — the equipment they use is also carefully inspected under international technical regulations.

Javelin throw is therefore far more than simply an event based on strength. At the international level, it is a highly technical discipline where strength, technique, precision and precisely regulated equipment all come together.
