Steve Smith continued his remarkable Test career by scoring his 36th Test century, remaining unbeaten on 129.
He was well supported by Travis Head, who played a superb innings of 166. Beau Webster also made a valuable contribution and was not out on 42, partnering Smith at the close of play.
For England, Brydon Carse was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Ben Stokes picked up two wickets.
Earlier, England had been dismissed for 384 runs in their first innings. As a result, Australia ended Day Three with a 134-run advantage, placing them in a commanding position heading into the latter stages of the match
