Sri Lanka’s final match of the 2026 T20 World Cup was played yesterday against Pakistan at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, with Pakistan edging a thrilling contest by just five runs.
Batting first, the Pakistan national cricket team posted 212 for 8 in their 20 overs. In response, the Sri Lanka national cricket team finished on 207 for 6 despite a spirited chase.
Shahibzada Farhan struck his second century of the tournament, scoring 100, while Fakhar Zaman blasted 84. The pair shared a dominant 176-run opening stand.
Dilshan Madushanka claimed three wickets, with Dasun Shanaka picking up two.
Shanaka then led Sri Lanka’s fightback with a blistering 76 off 31 deliveries, while Pawan Rathnayake added 58. However, the hosts fell just short in a nail-biting finish.
Although Pakistan won the match, they failed to qualify for the semi-finals as they needed a 65-run victory to overtake on net run rate. New Zealand advanced to the next round instead.
Speaking after the match, Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya revealed that he is considering stepping down from his role, though no official decision has been announced.
Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to issue a statement regarding the future of the head coaching position.
