Sri Lanka’s journey in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup came to an end in the group stage following a defeat to India. This marked Sri Lanka’s third consecutive loss in the tournament.

In the match held in Dubai, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided a strong start, building a 98-run partnership for the first wicket. Mandhana scored 50 runs, while Verma contributed 43 runs.

India ended their innings at 172/3 in 20 overs, the highest total recorded in the tournament so far. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur played a blistering unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 24 balls, including 4 fours and 6 sixes.

Chasing 173, Sri Lanka started poorly, losing Vishmi Gunaratne without a run on the board. The top order collapsed, leaving the team at 6/3 early in the innings. Throughout the tournament, Sri Lanka’s top-order batting remained a concern.

Sri Lanka was bowled out for 88 runs in 19.1 overs, with Kavisha Dilhari scoring 21 and Anushka Sanjeewani contributing 20. India’s Arundhati Reddy and Asha Sobhana claimed three wickets each.

India won the match convincingly by 82 runs, ensuring Sri Lanka’s early exit from the tournament.
