Sri Lanka got off to a flying start in the T20I series against Bangladesh, securing a dominant 7-wicket win in the first match played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in front of over 25,000 enthusiastic fans.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bowl first, giving Bangladesh the opportunity to bat under lights. The visitors managed to post 154 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Parvez Hossain Emon top-scored for Bangladesh with a handy 38 runs.
Chasing a target of 155, Sri Lanka’s opening pair—Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis—laid the perfect foundation. The duo put on 78 runs for the first wicket, setting the tone for a smooth chase.
Pathum Nissanka blazed to 42 off just 16 balls, hammering 5 fours and 3 sixes, while Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a brilliant 73 off 51 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes—his seventh T20I half-century.
Supporting knocks from Kusal Janith Perera (24) and a finishing six by captain Charith Asalanka sealed the deal for Sri Lanka with an over to spare, reaching 159 for 3 in 19 overs.
Kusal Mendis was rightfully named Player of the Match for his match-winning performance.
With this win, Sri Lanka leads the three-match series 1–0, and the home team will look to maintain momentum in the next encounter. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back and keep the series alive.
