Sri Lanka will take on Zimbabwe today in their final group-stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup, with the game set to get underway at 3 PM.
In a key squad update ahead of the business end of the tournament, fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka has been drafted into the Sri Lankan side for the upcoming matches. The Event Technical Committee of the International Cricket Council has approved the replacement.
Madushanka comes in for fellow speedster Matheesha Pathirana, who sustained an injury during the clash against Australia. Pathirana becomes the second Sri Lankan player to be ruled out of this year’s tournament, following Wanindu Hasaranga, who was also sidelined due to injury earlier.
Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are competing in Group B of the first round. Sri Lanka have enjoyed an impressive run so far, registering victories over Ireland, Oman, and Australia. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe secured wins against Oman and Australia, while their match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain.
Historically, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have met 11 times in T20 Internationals. Sri Lanka hold the upper hand with 8 wins, compared to Zimbabwe’s 3.
This will be the first T20 World Cup meeting between the two sides since 2012. Overall, it marks the third time Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe face off in a T20 World Cup, with Sri Lanka having won both previous encounters.
