Sri Lanka sealed their place in the Asia Cup T20 Super Four in style, advancing unbeaten from Group B after defeating Afghanistan by six wickets in Abu Dhabi. Bangladesh join Sri Lanka as the two qualifiers from the group, while Afghanistan bow out of the tournament.
Batting first, Afghanistan posted 169 for 8 in their 20 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant 60-run knock from skipper Mohammad Nabi. Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept the chase within reach, with Nuwan Thushara starring with 4 wickets for just 18 runs.
In reply, Sri Lanka cruised to victory in 18.4 overs, reaching 171 for 4. Kusal Mendis was the hero of the night, anchoring the innings with a flawless 74 not out — his 17th T20 half-century. He was well supported by Kusal Perera (28) and Kamindu Mendis (26).
For his match-winning innings, Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match.
Sri Lanka now move into the Super Four stage with great momentum. Their first clash comes on the 20th against Bangladesh in Dubai, followed by key encounters against Pakistan on the 23rd and India on the 26th.
