Sri Lankan long-distance runner Gamini Sugathadasa has made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan to win a medal in the 55–59 age category at a World Championship marathon event.
Competing at the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon (AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Championships) — one of the world’s premier annual athletic competitions — Gamini clinched third place among 2,358 competitors in his age group.
He completed the grueling 42.2 km course with an impressive time of 2 hours, 42 minutes, and 14 seconds, marking a remarkable achievement for Sri Lanka on the global marathon stage.
Over 50,000 runners from across the world participated in this year’s marathon, making Gamini’s podium finish a truly historic moment for Sri Lankan athletics.
