Sri Lankan athlete Rasara Wijesooriya has set a new national record in the women’s 5000 meters at the World University Games held in Germany. She completed the race in 15 minutes, 52.60 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by Gayanthika Abeyratne since 2021.
Abeyratne’s former record was 15 minutes, 55.84 seconds, making Wijesooriya’s achievement a significant milestone in Sri Lankan athletics.
In the final race, Wijesooriya finished 11th overall, showing remarkable consistency. Earlier in the same event, she also broke the national record for the women’s 10,000 meters, further cementing her status as a rising star in long-distance running for Sri Lanka.
