Sri Lanka officially launched the “Mission Olympic 2028: Journey to Rings” program today, with the goal of winning an Olympic medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Duncan White Auditorium under the guidance of Minister of Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, and is implemented by the Department of Sports Development.
The program currently supports 85 elite athletes and their coaches across four categories, providing monthly financial assistance.
- Category 1: Rs. 150,000 for each athlete and Rs. 100,000 for their coach
- Category 2: Rs. 100,000 for each athlete and Rs. 75,000 for their coach
- Category 3: Rs. 75,000 for each athlete and Rs. 50,000 for their coach
- Category 4: Rs. 50,000 for each athlete and Rs. 30,000 for their coach
In addition, athletes will receive a monthly nutrition allowance of Rs. 60,000, while selected individuals will also be sent abroad for international training with full funding. Payments are scheduled to begin from April this year.
The launch event was attended by the Minister of Sports, Deputy Minister Sugath Thilakaratne, and Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Eranga Gunasekara, among others.
