A tragedy has struck the Sri Lanka cricket camp as Suranga Wellalage, father of young all-rounder Dunith Wellalage, passed away last night.
He reportedly suffered a heart attack while watching the Asia Cup T20 clash between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, and was rushed to Panadura Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was 54 years old.
Suranga Wellalage, a former student of Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa, was remembered as a beloved figure in his community. His sudden passing has cast a shadow over Sri Lanka’s celebrations after securing an unbeaten qualification to the Super Four stage.
Dunith Wellalage returned home immediately following the game. Reports suggest his availability for the upcoming Super Four fixtures remains uncertain as he copes with the loss.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to begin their Super Four campaign on the 20th against Bangladesh in Dubai, but the team now faces the added emotional challenge of rallying around one of their youngest stars during this difficult time.
