The Sunrisers Hyderabad have decided to hand temporary captaincy to Ishan Kishan for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, which is scheduled to begin on March 28.
The decision comes after regular captain Pat Cummins was ruled out of the opening matches due to an injury.
Cummins’ injury has already forced him to miss the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and he is still yet to make a full recovery.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to open their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28, but team management has confirmed that Cummins’ availability for that match—and a few other early fixtures—remains uncertain.
As a result, Ishan Kishan will lead the side during the first phase of the tournament. Interestingly, this will also mark the first time since 2019 that all 10 IPL teams are captained by Indian players at the same time.
It’s a big opportunity for Kishan to step up and guide Sunrisers Hyderabad through the early stage of the season.
