The fifth and final Test of the historic Ashes series between England and Australia got underway today, but bad weather heavily disrupted play on Day One, restricting action to just 45 overs.
Batting first, England reached 211 for 3 when stumps were called on the opening day.
Australia made early inroads, removing three England wickets for 57 runs. However, the momentum then shifted as Joe Root and Harry Brook came together to build a strong recovery.
At the close of play, Root was unbeaten on 72, while Brook remained not out on 78, with the pair adding an unbroken 154-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
For Australia, Mitchell Starc, Michael Neser, and Scott Boland claimed one wicket each.
Australia have already clinched the five-match Test series 3–1, heading into this final encounter
