Sri Lanka kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign with a 20-run victory over Ireland today at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
After winning the toss, Ireland invited Sri Lanka to bat first. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara gave a steady start, adding 28 runs for the first wicket before Mishara departed for 14. Nissanka scored 24, while Pawan Rathnayake managed 5 and Dunith Wellalage added 10.
The momentum shifted thanks to a blistering knock from Kamindu Mendis, who smashed 44 off just 19 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.
Kusal Mendis anchored the innings superbly, remaining unbeaten on 56, marking his 18th T20 half-century. Sri Lanka finished on 163/5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 164, Ireland lost Paul Stirling early for 6. Ross Adair made 34 before falling to Wanindu Hasaranga, while Lorcan Tucker scored 21. The top score came from Harry Tector with 40.
A crucial turning point came when Maheesh Theekshana struck in consecutive deliveries, removing Ben Calitz and Gareth Delany. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers dominated, with Maheesh Theekshana (3/23) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3/25) leading the charge. Matheesha Pathirana claimed 2 wickets, while Dushmantha Chameera and Dunith Wellalage picked up one each.
Sri Lanka now have early momentum as they look to build a strong run in the tournament.
