Gamini Wickramapala assumed duties as the new Director of the National Youth Corps today (23rd) at the National Youth Corps headquarters. The event was attended by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, and Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Eranga Gunasekara.

With over thirty years of experience as a senior officer in the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, Gamini Wickramapala has previously served as the Director at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Chairman of the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority, and Acting Chairman of the National Youth Services Council.

Following his appointment, the new Director addressed the officials, stating that he would work closely with the current government to empower young people, in line with new government policies. He emphasized that he would work collaboratively with all officials at the National Youth Corps, irrespective of political differences.

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports also shared his thoughts at the event, mentioning that today’s youth are increasingly isolated and attracted to fake relationships, highlighting the importance of guiding them towards creating a compassionate and socially connected youth. The Minister stressed that this would play a key role in the development of the country.

Furthermore, the Minister expressed the intention to establish a Political Academy in the future to engage young people in politics, ensuring they are not excluded from the political process. He also stressed the importance of working according to key indicators for social development and human progress, and reiterated that no position should be awarded based on personal preferences.

The Minister concluded by reminding the officials of their responsibility to nurture a sensitive, loving, and compassionate youth, one that can lead society towards success. He called on everyone to take this responsibility seriously in their future work.
