In reply, Zimbabwe managed 251 runs in their first innings, with Sean Williams scoring a resilient 137. Wiaan Mulder starred with the ball for South Africa, taking 4 wickets.

In their second innings, South Africa declared at 369 runs. Wiaan Mulder played his best Test innings to date, scoring 147 runs. Wellington Masakadza took 4 wickets for Zimbabwe.

Consequently, Zimbabwe were set a daunting target of 537 runs to win. At stumps, Zimbabwe were 41/2 in their second innings, still needing 496 more runs to pull off an improbable victory.
