In a historic encounter at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka’s cricket team suffered their heaviest defeat in Test cricket, succumbing to Australia by an innings and 242 runs in the first Test of the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy.
Australia’s dominance was evident from the outset. Opting to bat first, they amassed a formidable total of 654 for 6 declared, propelled by stellar performances from Usman Khawaja, who notched a career-best 232, and Josh Inglis, who scored a century on his Test debut. Stand-in captain Steve Smith also made a significant contribution with 141 runs.
In response, Sri Lanka’s first innings concluded at 165 runs, with Dinesh Chandimal being the standout performer, scoring 72 runs.

Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was instrumental in dismantling the Sri Lankan batting lineup, claiming five wickets for 63 runs.
Following their dismissal, Sri Lanka began their second innings, trailing by 489 runs. Opening batsmen Oshada Fernando and Dimuth Karunaratne fell early, with Oshada dismissed for six and Karunaratne failing to score. Sri Lanka was eventually bowled out for 247 runs in their second innings. The highest scorer was Jeffrey Vandersay, who made 53 runs. Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon took four wickets each in the second innings.
This defeat surpasses Sri Lanka’s previous record for their largest Test loss, which was an innings and 239-run defeat to India in Nagpur in 2017. For Australia, this victory marks their biggest Test win on the subcontinent, highlighting their dominance in the region.

Usman Khawaja was named the Player of the Match for his exceptional double century, which set up a massive first-innings total. Steve Smith also reached a significant milestone, scoring his 10,000th run in Test cricket during the match.
The second Test of the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy is set to begin on February 8, 2025, once again at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka will be under immense pressure to regroup and produce a stronger performance after their record-breaking defeat. With questions looming over their batting depth and bowling consistency, the team management may consider changes to the playing XI.
Meanwhile, Australia will look to carry their momentum into the second Test, aiming for a series sweep. With players like Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, and Matthew Kuhnemann in top form, the visitors will be confident of another dominant display.
