Sri Lanka’s top swimmer, Akalanka Peiris, delivered an outstanding performance at the Australian National Short Course Swimming Championships, setting a new Sri Lankan record in the 100m Individual Medley.
Peiris clocked an impressive 55.89 seconds, breaking his own previous national record of 56.49 seconds — a remarkable milestone in Sri Lankan swimming history.
Adding to his achievements, he also recorded his personal best in the 50m backstroke, finishing in 24.84 seconds, securing 4th place in the event. With that, Akalanka became the first Sri Lankan swimmer ever to qualify for a final at the Australian National Short Course Championships.
Notably, he is also the only Asian athlete to qualify for a final at this year’s championship — a feat that highlights his exceptional talent and dedication.
Currently pursuing his higher education at CQ University in Australia, Peiris continues to balance academics and sport with remarkable discipline. He is now in intense training for the upcoming South Asian, Asian, and Commonwealth Games, as well as the World Championships.
His ultimate dream? To represent Sri Lanka at the 2028 Olympic Games — a goal that seems well within reach for this rising star.
